When it comes to teaching someone to cook, I am not someone who you should send your student to, and that could be due to the fact that I consider the preparation to be something more than just cooking.

Once you understand the basics, you open the door to all sorts of possibilities. What this does is it will give you the foundation you need, which will let you know how long a particular food item needs to be boiled, grilled or pan seared before it is ready to be served.
The next stage is to personalize the meal into something that your friends and family will look forward to tasting, especially after the first time. The recipes are certainly a good thing, that is of course, if you don't know how to cook already.
Personally, I would much prefer to spend some time putting together an experiment or two for the people I cook for. I don't mind following a recipe, but for the most part that only serves the purpose of a guideline.
