Taking precautions against a fire

Because I spend a fair amount of time in the kitchen, you would think that I would always have a fire extinguisher close by, just in case things don't go according to plan. Sadly, I am less than prepared when it comes to getting ready for such a mishap.

The fact of the matter is that if it did not warn me at some point in time, I would probably forget to change the batteries in my smoke detector too. Yes I know, I should be checking it at daylight savings time.

Every homeowner should have their bases covered when it comes to fire prevention, especially since the consequences can turn out to be very disastrous, to say the least. You would think that I would be better than I am when it comes to kitchen fires, especially since I have already been through one.

I never really knew how flammable hot oil can be, so when I screwed up and forgot to turn the heat down in something that I was frying, I made a mistake that I would live to regret.

It is possible to start a fire without a flame as I soon realized, all you need is hot oil and water. When I saw the smoke, you guessed it, I threw water in the oil, trying to protect the house from burning down.

Thankfully I did not need to call the fire department, but things could have gotten a whole lot worse. Needless to say, there was a lot of black scorching in the stove area, but it was contained, naturally I never did that again.
